Compensation

Salary Range: $22.56 - $32.31 / hour

Pay for PRN positions is calculated differently than Full-Time, Regular Part-Time, and Part-Time positions. PRN Rates depend on the position and other factors, including years of experience, or shift commitment according to the department policy. PRN differential is added in certain positions.

Responsibilities

Position Overview:

The Perioperative Care Technician assists the Physicians and Registered Nurses within Surgical Services pursuant to the objectives and policies of CMHs.  To facilitate a smooth transition between surgical procedures and assist nursing staff in the maintenance of a clean environment.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • One (1) year prior work experience
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Preferred:

  • Undergraduate degree
  • Completion of a Medical Terminology course
  • Bilingual in Spanish
  • Previous health care experience

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  1. Clinical Practice - Provides assistance to the Physicians and RN under their direction within Scope of Practice.
  2. Daily Tasks - Performs daily tasks to ensure the efficient operation of the unit.
  3. Documentation - Documents activities in an accurate and timely manner to ensure quality patient care and comply with regulations / policies.
  4. Supply and Equipment Maintenance - Supports the operation of the unit by maintaining supplies and equipment necessary for patient care. Monitors stock levels, restocks as necessary, and removes unsafe or damaged equipment from use.
  5. Leadership - Coordinates with purchasing, vendors, surgeons, and nursing special order items and instrumentation.
  6. Inventory - Maintains database for special order items, updates daily inventory database.
  7. Performance Improvement - Participates in unit Performance Improvement activities.
  8. Will assume anesthesia tech duties as needed. (Competencies required)
  9. Stocks shelves from inventory received.
  10. Assists OR staff in locating stock in the OR, storeroom, CS, or at other facilities.
  11. Cleans/decontaminate reusable supplies and equipment.
  12. Remove used suction canisters and replace with functioning unit.
  13. Clean OR room between cases as directed by nursing staff.
  14. Change anesthesia circuits between cases as required.
  15. Remove linen and trash from the O.R. and other departments.
  16. Make up O.R. table between cases.
  17. Perform environmental cleaning in the O.R. between cases and terminal cleaning at the end of the day per sanitation policy.
  18. Assist with patient transport, lifting, and positioning under the direction of the RN or Physician.
  19. Manage hazardous waste; remove and replace sharps/reprocessing containers as needed.
  20. Maintain stock of unsterile supplies in sub-sterile rooms, including suction canisters, bed linen packs, specimen supplies (pathology slips, containers, and plastic bags).
  21. Stock blanket warmers in the O.R.
  22. Distribute linen to required locations in the O.R.
  23. Maintain supplies and cleanliness in the sub-sterile rooms.
  24. Operate sterilization equipment per policy.
  25. Be attentive to surgical case flow and assist with instrument and equipment needs between cases (e.g., video equipment).
  26. Restock supplies in the central sterile area as needed.
  27. Perform and maintain records of daily and weekly biological testing.
  28. Clean and maintain sterilizers.
  29. Apply principles of aseptic technique in handling and transporting sterile supplies.
  30. Rotate sterile supplies and check expiration dates on all supplies.
  31. Deliver specimens to appropriate areas.
  32. Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changes in work assignments.
  33. Demonstrate tact and understanding in interactions with team members, members of other disciplines, and the public.
  34. Pull supplies for surgical procedures as needed.
  35. Clean and restock operating rooms after late cases as needed.
  36. Restock anesthesia medication and supply carts with demonstrated competency.
  37. Precept new Perioperative Care Technicians.
  38. Take call as required.
  39. Perform other duties as assigned.
